Francesco Scavullo (1921-2004)is an American fashion photographer best known for his celebrity portraits, particularly those that appeared on the cover of Cosmopolitanmagazine. Born in New York City, Scavullo began his photography career with his father’s camera using his sisters as models, and after graduating high school began working in a studio that produced fashion catalogs. He soon moved on to Voguemagazine where he spent three years as photographer Horst P. Horst’s assistant, eventually winning a contract with Seventeen magazine in 1948 and opening his own studio in Manhattan.
Some of Scavullo’s portraits have been controversial, such as the nude Burt Reynolds centerfold for Cosmopolitan, “overly sexual” images of a young Brooke Sheilds, and his closed relationship with Gia Carangi. He has also made many film and Broadway posters, for productions such as the film A Star is Born (1976) featuring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, as well as a portrait of Julie Andrews for the play Victor Victoria (1955). Corners rounded. Ink spot on verso. Fine condition.
